Important Announcement
to Chartered and Qualified
ARBITRATORS and MEDIATORS
Changes to the Continuing Education and Engagement (CEE) Program for 2021
Since 2009, Chartered and Qualified Mediators have been required to submit a report with an administrative fee of $99 every three years, indicating they have achieved the requisite number of CEE points to maintain their designated status.
New, beginning January 1, 2021:
When does it start?
CEE reports will be due annually starting January 1, 2021 with the deadline to submit your report December 31st of each year. The number of points required annually will be one third of the amount required under the previous 3-year program; see below for details. (Extensions to the annual timeframe up to a maximum of three years may be available for those who are on parental leave, major illness or disability leave, etc.)
Who is affected?
All designation holders: In addition to designated mediators (who have had to collect and report since 2009 – C.Meds and Q.Meds), designated ARBITRATORS (C.Arbs, Q.Arbs and C.Med-Arbs) are required to collect points beginning January 1st, and submit their report by December 31st each year.
What are the points required?
33 points annually for anyone with a Chartered designation(s), and 20 points annually for those holding only a Qualified designation(s)[1]. Those with two designations are not required to submit two reports or to earn more or different points. See the new Instructions/Points Chart which reflects the new annual reporting amounts. (There are also two points specific to the new Med-Arb designation.)
How do I report?
The Instructions/Points Chart and reporting form are available under the “Professional Designations/CEE” tab on our website. The form is in fillable Word format until we are able to implement a new, more automated system in tandem with the improved member database system we are researching for implementation in fall 2021.
New designation recipients in 2020
Members who received their first designation in 2020 may have received a reporting deadline 3 years from the date you received your designation; that is no longer the case. You will begin on the new CEE annual system for 2021, and should plan to submit your first CEE report on December 31, 2021.
Why the change?
- It is as important for our designated arbitrator members to stay on top of advances in their field as it is for our designated mediator members.
- Many members were concerned about forgetting their due dates (which were based on the anniversary date of receipt of their designation). Having the same due date of December 31st each year simplifies remittances.
- Many members have stated they had misplaced documentation and certificates because the reporting deadline was so long (every 3 years) and suggested annual reporting would be easier.
- The new CEE reporting deadline aligns with other societies’ Continuing Legal Education /Continuing Professional Development reporting requirements, making it easier for those with dual memberships to prepare both reports at the same time.
- Members expressed confusion about the CEE filing fee and designations dues, and suggested we just incorporate them into the designation fee.
What if I am on leave and cannot accumulate enough CEE in a year?
Those who are on parental leave, major illness or disability leave, etc. may apply for an extension. Contact admin@adric.ca.
How much will it cost?
The cost is the same: the previous $99 administrative fee submitted with CEE reports every three years will instead be incorporated into the annual designation renewal fee as $33 per year. There will be no separate or increased fee when submitting reports.

What if I have a reporting date in the next couple of years?
We are in the process of contacting some designated mediators who are past due to submit their report (for 100 pts for C.Med and 60 points for Q.Med) in 2020 and are providing an extension to submit by January 31, 2021. The $99 admin fee is immediately due. You will begin on the new CEE annual system for 2021.
For those who were originally due in 2021 or 2022, we will “catch you up” to the new system as follows:
- Originally due in 2021 – will be asked to provide a $66 “bridging” fee to catch up (the other $33 will be collected as part of their 2021 renewal fee). For your convenience, we are adding this fee to your member portal to remit at the same time as your 2021 designation dues. Your CEE report (covering the previous 3 year period) will still be due in 2021. You may submit your report by December 31, 2021.
- Originally due in 2022 – will be asked to provide a $33 “bridging” fee to catch up (the other $66 will be collected as part of your renewal fees for 2021 and 2022). For your convenience, we are adding this fee to your member portal to remit at the same time as your 2021 designation dues. You will begin on the new CEE annual system for 2021, and will submit your next CEE report on December 31, 2021.
- Originally due in 2023 & 2024 – if you submitted your report in 2020, you may have received a confirmation message with the next reporting date in 3 years; that is no longer the case: You will begin on the new CEE annual system for 2021, and should plan to submit your next CEE report on December 31, 2021.
