As keynote speaker, Bill will be presenting on the exponential growth of arbitration for the resolution of business disputes in Canada has taken place at a time of rapid change in the legal marketplace. This has complicated the search for objectively neutral arbitrators as well as the requirement for arbitrators to make relevant disclosures. Some of the problems are inherent in commercial arbitration and some relate to more recent trends such as social media and third party funding. International standards such as the IBA Guidelines on Conflict of Interest do not easily align with the needs and expectations of parties in a smaller, non-international market such as Canada. Bill Horton will discuss these issues from the perspective of a leading arbitrator of Canadian business disputes.
