Family Practice Mediation
Early in 2019, two of ADRIC’s Affiliates identified a need for family practice designations in regions where there were none. They came to ADRIC with a request that it develop criteria for national designations to recognize those with the appropriate experience and skills to maintain high standards.
ADRIC consulted with all Affiliates to determine the demand for such designations across the country. Some Affiliates stated their region was covered by other provincial family ADR organizations so “opted out” of offering them, while others expressed great interest.
At this time, these designations are available only via the following Affiliates, though the committee structures required to recommend the designations are still being established so any applications received are being held in abeyance for the time being:
The ADRIC Designations Committee reviewed the criteria of numerous organizations and developed its own where the need is greatest: for the Qualified Mediator (Family) / Q.Med(Fam) designation to start.
The Qualified Mediator (Family) designation recognizes member applicants who have completed sufficient training in mediation and related dispute resolution to be qualified to practice as entry-level mediators in separation and divorce matters.

What do I need to apply for the Qualified Mediator (Family) designation?
Education:
- Successful completion of 40 hours of ADRIC-Accredited mediation training covering specific areas (see criteria);
- 100 hours of ADRIC-Accredited specialized training in dispute resolution or related field, which must include a minimum of 80 hours specialized Family Mediation training;
Administrative Experience
- Demonstrate an ability to handle the administrative aspects of a separation/ divorce mediation from beginning to end by describing your typical process from intake of clients to follow-up after the mediation. Include one sample of your Agreement to Mediate and any other paperwork you use with clients.
- Provide a copy of a redacted separation/ divorce mediated agreement to show knowledge of the process (or provide a sample based on your supervised practice mediation).
Practical experience
- Two years of experience working with families in a related context
- Two family co-mediations (paid or unpaid) where the applicant has clearly been the lead mediator
- One supervised and assessed practice family mediation (assessed by a Supervisor approved by the Regional Affiliate).
Ongoing
- ADRIC requires all Designated members to provide proof of a minimum of $1 million insurance coverage for their protection and for the protection of those for whom they provide services. View the ADRIC Insurance Program.
AND
- Designated members must also commit to Continued Education and Engagement (CEE).
