Jim McCartney has arbitrated a wide range of domestic and international disputes since 1998 both as sole arbitrator and as a party-appointed panel member. He has been appointed by the Alberta Court of King’s Bench on several occasions.
He is a C.Arb, C.Med, and C.Med-Arb, Past President of the ADR Institute of Alberta, a former Director of ADRIC, recipient of the Lionel J. McGowan award, and a director of the Western Canada Commercial Arbitration Society. He is co-chair of ADRIC’s Arbitration Modernisation Project. Who’s Who Legal Canada named him National Leader—Arbitration in 2022 and Best Lawyers named him 2023 Lawyer of the Year in Calgary for ADR.
Community service appointments have included four terms on the Chartered Professional Accountants of Alberta discipline and appeal tribunals.
