Correspondence Course in Arbitration
The ADR Institute of Canada (ADRIC) offers a correspondence course in arbitration at an economical rate for individuals who prefer self-learning or are unable to attend local courses. It may be started and completed according to each student’s own schedule.
The 27 lessons that comprise this two-part correspondence program are designed for those with post-secondary education. The course covers concepts and procedures of contract and tort law, arbitration acts and procedures, evidence and court control of arbitration.
After completing each lesson, students must complete and submit an assignment (in Word format). The assignments require full answers and opinions. Depending on the question, a brief summary of the facts, the issues, the decision and the “why” of the decision are required for a full answer. The ability to ignore unimportant information is vital. These assignments are given to test the student in his/her understanding of basic law principles and ability to analyze cases and situations. In analysis and award questions both the understanding of law and the students’ ability to evaluate all aspects of the situation and to explain them in writing are required. Some such questions may have no “correct” answers.
All assignments are marked by experienced and practiced Chartered Arbitrators who will insert marks and comments for immediate feedback.
Once successfully completed, this course fulfills the educational requirements for ADR Institute of Canada’s national designations of Qualified Arbitrator (Q.Arb) and Chartered Arbitrator (C.Arb).
Based on the latest edition of “The Law and Business Administration in Canada” (Smyth Soberman Easson), complimented by supplements, web pages etc., Part One is intended to provide non-lawyers with an understanding of the law of contracts and torts, and an introduction to commercial arbitration statutes. Lawyers admitted to the bar in Canada and licensed paralegals do NOT have to complete Part One. After all assignments have been completed, an exam must be written.
