Abstract
Online mediation meeting E4C March 17, 16.30-18.30 CET
Given the worldwide pandemic, the use of online tools is very much in the picture. In the last E4C session, we focused on e-negotiation. Now we build further on this online aspect by looking at the mediation setting. We invite everyone with an interest in this topic to join! Advanced knowledge of (online) mediation is not necessary. We hope to welcome people with various backgrounds (law, business, communication, psychology, ICT etc.) as we believe the field of online mediation would benefit from an interdisciplinary approach.
The aim of this session is twofold: First, we wish to take stock of online mediation: What is online mediation (not)? How does research inform us on online mediation? And how could it look like in practice? Second, we would like to encourage both practitioners and researchers to brainstorm on this timely topic in order to develop new ideas for research on online mediation: What would be fruitful avenues to examine?
The agenda looks as follows: After a brief introduction and state-of-art of online mediation, we invite participants into one of our workshops (a) Technology in mediation (panel discussion), (b) The do’s and don’ts of online mediation (workshop by an online mediator), and (c) Virtual peace mediation in an international setting (paper presentation). You are free to register for one of the workshops. After the workshops, you are invited in small break-out groups to discuss and share theories as well as practices from all fields that may be useful to enhance our knowledge on online mediation. We close by inviting an expert on Online Dispute Resolution (ODR), Colin Rule – part time lecturer at the Santa Clara University School of Law and CEO of Mediate.com– to comment on what is in the pipeline for online mediation on the short and longer run.
